Upland Country Day School’s Upper School is designed to prepare students academically, emotionally and socially for their next school placement by requiring full participation in all areas of school life. Upland believes in educating the whole child. We require full participation in academics, athletics and the arts so that each child gains the self-awareness and confidence he/she needs to shape identity and discover voice.
| "Upland recognizes that developing adolescents are very energetic and that their needs are varied." |
In keeping with the School’s philosophy of the “Four A’s” (Attitude, Academics, Arts and Athletics), the Upper School offers courses in English, math, history, science and foreign language. Technology is used to augment the curriculum across all grades. We are a Mac-based campus and have a fully integrated information and communication technology program. There is also a full arts program, which includes 2D and 3D visual arts, drama and music. All students have one marking period of each art discipline during the school year. Students play sports for all three seasons at the appropriate skill levels. In addition, students have the opportunity to participate in chorus, vocal ensemble, yearbook or student council, and all 8th and 9th graders have the opportunity to travel to Finland as part of the Upland Overseas program.
Upland recognizes that developing adolescents are very energetic and that their needs are varied. Students need clear guidelines, a supportive structure, and a wide variety of appropriate activities through which they can learn to deal with their own growth, to handle disappointments with grace, and to achieve competence and self-confidence by being successful in academics, arts and athletics.
The 9th grade year is a critical year for students at Upland as it allows those students the opportunity to consolidate their academic skills, to explore their own strengths, to mature in a caring and supportive environment, and to experience leadership positions in a variety of areas like student council, the arts, drama, yearbook and athletics. Upland looks to its 9th graders to set the tone for the school and to lead by example. Ninth grade is an opportunity to learn what it it is to be a leader while still firmly rooted in the friendly, supportive environment that Upland fosters.
