Setting:  The twenty-three acre rural campus is composed of three academic buildings, a technology center, a performing arts and athletic facility, an administration building, and an ice rink. Students come from nine school districts within a 25 mile radius of Kennett Square.

Faculty: Of the fifty-one full and part time faculty and staff members: 60% of the 33 teaching faculty and administration have or are pursuing advanced degrees; median experience is 15 years; the student faculty ratio is 9:1. Class size averages 13 in the Lower School and 15 in the Upper School.

Governance: Upland is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) corporation and is governed by a 15 member, self-perpetuating Board of Trustees, who are the only members of the corporation.  The Board has ultimate responsibility for the School as it plans, develops, and establishes the mission and philosophy of the institution, develops the operating policies, assesses the performance of the School in all areas, and is responsible for the School’s financial condition and its physical plant. The Board delegates broad authority to the Head of School for all School operations and for implementing Board policies.

Grading system: Grades 4 - 9 receive grades quarterly for academic achievement as well as motivation and citizenship.  In addition to written progress reports, parent conferences are held in the fall and spring.

Special programs: Among many programs are laboratory science beginning in kindergarten, Spanish in Pre K - 5; Latin and Spanish in grades 6 - 9; four strands of arts (2D, 3D, drama, and music); required sports program (soccer and field hockey, boys and girls ice hockey, volleyball, cross country, boys and girls lacrosse); Finnish exchange program (since 1977 - a boy and girl  Finnish student in 9th grade each year and yearly 8th and 9th grade  trips to Finland and neighboring countries).

Before and After School Care:  Upland's Before and After School Care programs are designed to meet the needs of children and parents beyond the traditional school day. Before School Care, "Early Birds", opens at 7:30 am on days when school is in session and is held in the Primary Center for Pre-K, K and 1st Grade students and in the Student Center for students in grades 2 - 9.  There is no charge for this service.  After School Care, which is located in the Technology Center, runs from 12:00 noon until 6:00 pm for families who have registered for the service.  To ensure proper staffing, After-School Care is contracted and prepaid seasonally, according to a schedule that is aligned with the athletic program.  In order to help families needing emergency childcare, we offer an "In-a-Pinch" service on a limited basis.

Secondary school entrance exams:  Ninth graders’ median scores on the SSAT (Secondary School Admissions Test for 9th graders) generally places them in the top 15% nationally.

Secondary Schools attended: The Classes of 2009 and 2010 (we graduate approximately 25 students annually) are enrolled at the following day and boarding schools: Sanford School, Archmere Academy, The Tatnall School, Wilmington Friends School,Westtown School, West Nottingham Academy, Mercersburg Academy, Berkshire School, Tabor Academy, The Hill School, Salisbury School, Episcopal School, The Lawrenceville School, and Cushing Academy as well as area public schools.

Memberships and accreditation: Upland is accredited by the Pennsylvania Association of Independent Schools (PAIS - 2001).  In addition, the School is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), Delaware Association of Independent Schools (DAIS), Advancement for Delaware Valley Independent Schools (ADVIS) and the Council of the Advancement of Schools in Education (CASE).

Financial Aid:  Approximately 28% of the student body receives financial aid.
